ROXON MODULAR MULTITOOLS: Which One Is Right For You?

What Is a Modular Multitool?

A modular multitool is a multitool you can rebuild. Instead of a fixed set of tools riveted into the handle, it uses swappable add-ons that you add, remove, or rearrange by hand, so the tool carries exactly what you need and nothing you don't.

Be honest: how many tools on your current multitool have you actually used? Most people reach for the same three or four, every single time. The rest just add weight to your pocket. And when one implement breaks or wears out, the whole tool usually ends up in a drawer.

ROXON's Flex System was built to fix both problems. Each Flex tool has slots for interchangeable implements, from knife blades and screwdrivers to wire strippers, scalpels, and bit adapters. Today the Flex ecosystem includes 55 implements, and most of them fit across the whole lineup. Two models go even further and also accept blades from ROXON's Phantom Blade System.

There are five Flex tools to choose from. They share the same idea but are built for very different people. Here's how to tell them apart.

The Five Flex Multitools, Up Close

Flex Titan: the one you can't break

The Flex Titan exists because our customers asked for it. People were pushing the Flex System hard (mechanics, anglers, off-roaders) and wanted something tougher. So we built a pliers-first tool around heavy-duty needle-nose pliers with wire cutters, wrapped it in textured black G10 scales, and gave it a D2 steel blade.

Here's what makes it different: the Titan is the only Flex tool built to run both of ROXON's modular systems on one frame. That means you can swap in any of the 55 Flex add-ons and any of the 17 blades. Out of the box, you also get full-size scissors, a saw, a file, a wire stripper, a cord cutter, a serrated blade, a bottle and can opener, a 1/4" bit driver, a T-shank adapter, and a hidden ballpoint pen for when your phone dies and you need to write something down.

Get it if: your multitool lives on your belt, not in a drawer, and you've broken one before.

Flex Modular: the original build-your-own multitool

The Flex Modular is where it all started. It's a stainless steel pliers frame with two arms and 10 add-on slots, two of which take long add-ons. You decide what goes in every one of them.

The pre-installed kit comes ready to work: needle-nose and regular pliers, wire cutters with a replaceable cutter, a knife, scissors, screwdrivers, a can and bottle opener, a wire stripper, an awl, a rope cutter, a belt clip, and a MOLLE sheath. A one-hand lever unlocks and deploys tools, and every add-on locks open when you're using it. Don't need all 10 slots? Spacers are included, so you can strip the tool down and save weight.

Get it if: you love tweaking your gear and want pliers with the most room to customize.

Flex Shears: the multitool with real scissors

Most multitool scissors are an afterthought. They cut thread and tape, and that's about it. The Flex Shears flip that around and put ROXON's biggest, strongest scissors at the center of the tool. They're inspired by the full-size scissors on our popular KS2E, then scaled up for thicker materials.

Around the scissors, you get three swappable short add-ons (an awl and threader; a file, ruler, and flathead screwdriver; and a wire stripper with a wood carving chisel). There's also a knife slot that takes any Phantom blade, from tanto to serrated to rescue blades. A green and red indicator shows at a glance whether the tool is locked.

Get it if: you cut more than you twist. Think first aid kits, crafting, gardening, opening boxes, or cutting cord at camp.

Flex Companion: everyday carry without the pliers

Not everyone needs pliers every day. The Flex Companion is a slim, modular tool for people who want a real toolkit in their pocket without the bulk of a pliers frame.

It holds up to 5 long implements and comes pre-installed with 6 tools plus 2 bonus tools, including a D2 steel blade with a thumb stud for one-handed opening. A fixed 1/4" bit adapter with a magnetic Phillips bit, plus a built-in toothpick and tweezers, round it out. Want to start from scratch? Pick the frame-only version and choose every implement yourself. There is an option to add the mini pliers add-on to add more functionality to this everyday tool.

Get it if: you want a daily pocket tool for office, home, and weekend use that you can reconfigure anytime.

Mini Flex Companion: big ideas, tiny tool

The Mini Flex Companion is the smallest member of the family and our easiest entry into modular tools. It takes up to 4 short add-ons, plus a fixed bit adapter with a magnetic Phillips bit, a toothpick, and tweezers. It ships with 7 short tools and 1 bonus tool already installed.

It comes in fun colors too, including Orange, Sahara, and Slate Grey, which makes it easy to spot at the bottom of a bag.

Get it if: you want a modular tool that disappears in a pocket, a purse, or a travel kit, or you're buying a first multitool for someone.

How to Choose Your Flex Multitool

Still deciding? Answer these three questions and the right tool usually picks itself.

1. Do you need pliers? If you work on cars, bikes, fishing gear, or anything with wire, the answer is yes. Choose the Flex Titan for heavy-duty use and swappable blades, or the Flex Modular for the most slots at a lower price. If you mostly open boxes, tighten screws, and trim things, skip the pliers and save the weight.

2. How much do you cut? If scissors are the tool you reach for most, the Flex Shears are built around exactly that. Nothing else in the lineup cuts as well.

3. How small does it need to be? For a front pocket or a work bag, the Flex Companion holds the most tools. For a keychain, purse, or carry-on, the Mini Flex Companion is the one you'll actually carry.

Here's the nice thing about going modular: you're not locked in. Because most Flex add-ons fit across the lineup, the add-ons you buy for one tool can move to the next. Plenty of owners start with a Companion for daily carry and add a pliers-based Flex for the garage or truck later.

One tip from our team: don't fill every slot on day one. Carry the tool for two weeks, notice what you actually reach for, and then build it out. You'll end up with a lighter, more personal tool.

Modular Multitool FAQs

What is the difference between the Flex Titan and the Flex Modular?

Both are pliers-based modular multitools. The Flex Titan has heavier-duty construction, G10 scales, a D2 blade, and accepts both Flex implements and Phantom blades. The Flex Modular is a titanium frame with 10 add-on slots and costs less.

Are Flex implements interchangeable between ROXON tools?

Mostly, yes. Most Flex implements fit the Flex Modular, Flex Companion, and Flex Titan. The Mini Flex Companion and Flex Shears take short add-ons only. Check each add-on's listing for compatibility.

Which ROXON modular multitool is best for everyday carry?

For most people, the Flex Companion is the best everyday carry option: it's slim, and holds up to 5 long add-ons. If you need pliers daily, choose the Flex Modular. If you want the smallest option, choose the Mini Flex Companion.

Can I build my own ROXON multitool from scratch?

Yes. Several Flex tools are available as a frame only, so you can choose every add-on yourself. Browse the Build Your Own Multitool collection.

What warranty comes with ROXON Flex multitools?

ROXON tools are covered by a 25-year warranty.

Carry What You Need. Swap the Rest.

A regular multitool asks you to adapt to it. A modular one adapts to you, and keeps adapting as your hobbies, job, and carry change. When an add-on wears out, you replace that one piece, not the whole tool.

Pick the Flex that matches how you work today, then build it out as you go. Explore the full lineup in our modular multitool collection, every tool backed by ROXON's 25-year warranty.
